Ensign/Lieutenant Ezri Dax is a counselor by training, currently assigned to Deep Space Nine.  Ezri Dax is the ninth and current host of the Dax symbiont.   Previous hosts included four males and four females.  The Dax symbiont was on a transport back to Trill to be joined with another host following the death of Jadzia.  Ezri Teegan was an unjoined Trill and a Starfleet Ensign who was a passenger on the same transport.  The symbiont's medical condition worsened and the Trill doctor on board stated that the symbiont needed a host immediately in order to survive.  Ezri was the only available host, although she had not studied in the initiate program and was not a candidate.  She became Ezri Dax enroute to Trill.  When a host is joined with a symbiont, the symbiont's name, Dax, is added to the host's given name, Ezri, replacing the family name, Teegan (Prodigal Daughter).  The joined Trill becomes Ezri Dax.  She woke up a new person after the surgery; she had the memories of all previous hosts of the Dax symbiont, as well as the memories of Ezri, the current host.  Ezri Dax appeared at Captain Sisko's father's restaurant on Earth at the end of the first episode of the seventh and final season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Image in the Sand).   The Captain had taken an extended leave of absence from Starfleet at the end of the sixth season after Jadzia Dax had been killed by Gul Dukat to return to Earth to see what the prophets had in store for him (Tears of the Prophets).  He had been on Earth for about two months and had just had a vision from the prophets and was about to leave Earth for Tyree to locate the Orb of the Emissary when Ezri Dax appeared.  She went along with him on the quest.  (Image in the Sand).  Captain Sisko returned to Deep Space Nine after locating the Orb, and Ensign Ezri Dax was assigned to Deep Space Nine as a counselor, since her training before being joined was as a counselor.  He convinced Starfleet to promote Ezri Dax to Lieutenant because of the considerable experience the previous hosts gave her.  She still has feelings for Worf, who was Jadzia's husband (You Are Cordially Invited ...), but he initially wanted nothing to do with her; she's not Jadzia.  Ezri has discovered that her feelings for Worf are for friendship, and she no longer desires an intimate relationship.
